On a night filled with big names like Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, and former President Bill Clinton, it was young Gus Walz who created one of the most memorable moments on the third day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
As Minnesota Governor Tim Walz delivered his speech accepting the Democratic vice-presidential nomination, he took a moment to acknowledge his family from the stage.
"Hope, Gus, and Gwen. You are my entire world, and I love you," Walz said.
As the cameras panned to the three in the audience, Gus, who had been enthusiastically clapping along with the crowd, stood up and tearfully pointed to his father.
"That's my dad!" Gus exclaimed.
The emotional scene quickly became a highlight of the DNC, showcasing a tender moment of love and pride amidst the larger political event.
The Walz family has previously shared insights into 17-year-old Gus’s "secret power." According to a People magazine profile, Gus is neurodivergent and has a learning disorder, but his family describes him as highly observant and "an excellent son and brother."
Gus also made headlines in 2019 when it was revealed that he held his father to a personal campaign promise. In March of 2017, Gus had expressed his desire for a dog, and Tim Walz promised that if he won the governor's race, they would get one.
Gus never mentioned it again—until Walz won the election over a year later. As election results were announced on TV, Gus immediately shouted, "Oh, now I get a puppy!"
True to his word, the family adopted Scout, a black Labrador mix from a rescue program. Gus took on the responsibilities of caring for Scout, including morning walks and cleanup duties, further endearing him to those who know his story.
