"That's my dad!": Gus Walz's Emotional Response to Tim Walz's DNC Speech

In a heartfelt moment, the youngest child of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz had an emotional reaction during his father's speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night.

As the vice-presidential running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, Tim Walz accepted his party's nomination for vice president, delivering the keynote speech at the convention in Chicago's United Center. During his address, he turned to his family—wife Gwen, 23-year-old daughter Hope, and 17-year-old son Gus—seated in the audience.

“Hope, Gus, and Gwen—you are my entire world, and I love you,” Walz said.

Moved by his father's words, Gus Walz stood up, proudly mouthing, "That's my dad! That's my dad!" He pointed toward the stage, saying, "I love you, Dad."

Gus Walz, 17, is the youngest of Tim and Gwen Walz’s children. He has ADHD, a nonverbal learning disorder, and an anxiety disorder. In a recent statement to People Magazine, the couple, both former teachers, shared that they noticed Gus’s differences early on and never viewed his conditions as obstacles.

"Like so many American families, it took us time to figure out how to ensure Gus was set up for success as he grew up," they said. "It took time, but we quickly realized that Gus’s condition is not a setback—it’s his secret power."

Gus's emotional response at the DNC resonated with viewers across the political spectrum. Networks covering the event, including Fox News and CNN, highlighted the moment as a powerful display of love and pride.

"I love Gus Walz," said MSNBC host and former White House press secretary Jen Psaki. "I'm going to start ugly crying just talking about him."

Dana Bash on CNN called it "the clip-and-save moment that everyone is going to be seeing." Meanwhile, MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle posted on X, "Forget politics. If you aren’t moved seeing 17-year-old Gus Walz in tears watching his Dad walk on stage as the Vice Presidential nominee… then please just move on."
